The areas where dirt can gather are known as dirt traps. These dirt traps are the perfect places for bacteria to grow. This increases the chances of infection spreading but also makes it harder to maintain the cleanliness of washrooms. This could be extremely dangerous within the healthcare industry where infection control is crucial to keep vulnerable people safe and healthy.
Grab rails can offer up hard to reach areas where bacteria can grow. A flange is attached to the end of the rail enabling it to be securely fixed to a surface; it is also an area where dirt can easily build up. On a flange the main areas where dirt traps can form are around the screw heads holding the rail to the wall. Another is in the small gap in the joint of the flange and the rail. The last one is in the space where the flange meets the wall, as there are two flanges per rail this means there are at least six possible dirt trap positions.
There are two ways to minimise the number of dirt traps to a grab rail. The first way is to use a concealed flanged rail. This means that the flanges of the rail are covered, concealing any possible dirt traps and making a easy cleanable surface, lowering the number of dirt traps.
The second way is to use a flangeless rail . If you eliminate the flange completely then the 3 main areas dirt gathers are removed. We offer a flangeless rail which does exactly this leaving the end of the rail flush to the wall, which also creates an easy cleanable surface, making it much easier to maintain the hygiene levels.
