The bathroom is a place we associate with relaxation and comfort. However the bathroom could actually be the most dangerous room in the house! Statistics show that around 235,000 over the age of 15 visit hospital emergency rooms due to injuries they’ve suffered in the bathroom, with almost 14% having to stay in hospital. These stats show that there is no age limit when it comes to injuries, although falls are more common with people who are aged 65 or over, a staggering one in three adults aged 65 or over who live at home will have at least one fall a year, up to 50% of the people will have more frequent falls.
Luckily most falls that occur do not lead to serious injury. However, there is always the risk that a fall could cause broken bones and even lead to other, more severe implications. Another effect of having a fall is it can cause the person to lose their confidence and feels as if they have lost their independence.
The best way to minimise the risk of falls within the bathroom is to be proactive. As one of the most dangerous activities is actually getting out of the bath or shower then ensuring that you are safe when doing so is extremely important.
One way this can be done is by having grab rails installed in your bathroom. Lots of people assume that grab rails can only be used within accessible washrooms, when in actual fact they are perfect for people making home adaptations planning for a safer future. Grab rails are designed to withstand high amounts of force making them ideal tools when transitioning to and from the bath or shower.
NYMAS believe that everyone should have independence and safety within their own environment. We are confident that within our product range there will be a grab rail that matches your needs and style requirements perfectly.
