An expert plumbing merchant has ‘run the rule’ over the health of the accessible washroom sector and – thankfully! - his insights contain plenty of positive news for everyone who works with commercial washrooms.
We asked David Sowerby, of Crossling Stockton, to tell us how the recent past, the present and the future of the accessible washroom trade looks from his point of view as a specialist merchant.
Read on to explore his insights…
David explained that his branch had seen two distinct types of customer during the COVID-19 lockdowns: “Firstly, commercial installers servicing projects funded by the government’s increase in spending on NHS projects and, secondly, homeowners updating bathrooms”.
He added that the end of the last lockdown has seen “a surge in business” although “lead times have supplied due to supply issues and the industry has seen significant price increases” (note: NYMAS stock is held, in quantity, in the UK for next day delivery to merchants).
The good news? Alongside the ongoing high demand for products, David feels that “the return to normal trading conditions coupled with the relaxation of restrictions” will add more stability to the trade.
He pointed out that it has been “heartening to see the greater choice and design available” in the accessible washroom sector, including the domestic products market.
“Bathroom options have become more contemporary in design and have allowed homeowners to future proof their homes without compromising on style.
“The days of having to purchase products designed in the 1970’s for the NHS should be long behind us. The ageing demographic gives the industry the opportunity to continue to supply well-designed stylish products,” he said.
Is everyone aware of the diversity of accessible washroom products now available to them? David feels that work still needs to be done.
“High street showrooms and the large retail outlets can help get the message across but suppliers and merchants can work together the help drive this emerging market.
“Ultimately it is up to us to help give our customers an informed choice as to what is available in the marketplace,” he concluded.
Our sincere thanks to David Sowerby for his fascinating insights into our sector from a merchant POV. NYMAS were proud to work with Crossling to help develop a brochure promoting the options available to their customers.
